Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) are our nominated charity for 2024—a charity that has profoundly impacted the lives of some of our colleagues and their families.

We are thrilled to announce that some members of the Jenks & Cattell Engineering team will be taking on the prestigious 3-Peaks Challenge later this week. This involves climbing the three highest mountains in the UK: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon—all within 24 hours! Our team has been training in North Wales to prepare for this extreme challenge and to make everyone proud in support of BCH.

Recently, BCH launched the ‘It Starts Here’ appeal to transform their main entrance, which welcomes 100,000 sick children each year, into a more welcoming and less intimidating space. Other fundraising efforts include £1 million annually for support and research, £1.5 million for the iMRI Appeal to enhance neurosurgical brain operations, and funds for play spaces and VR headsets to help distract and comfort children, reducing their anxiety.

We hope our support will contribute to innovative treatments for some of the UK’s sickest children. Your fundraising efforts enable BCH to make the hospital feel like home and help discover new ways to treat and cure childhood diseases.

Strategic OEM Partnerships

January has flown by, marking a bustling start to the year for Jenks & Cattell Engineering! We've kicked off 2025 with a strong performance, achieving £2.6 million in turnover from three OEMs in the off-highway and truck industry.

Notably, two of these OEMs have been our loyal and strategic partners for over two decades, sourcing laser-cut fabrications, welded assemblies, and metal pressings from our Wolverhampton plant.

Metal Press Tool Resource Projects

Our resource projects were executed with remarkable speed, thanks to our dedicated NPI (New Product Introduction) team, ensuring supply chain continuity. For our new truck OEM partner, we managed to dispatch metal parts just two weeks after receiving the initial resource tools, working through Christmas to achieve this feat. This project involved resourcing approximately 50 tools, a significant undertaking compared to our previous record of 290 press tools.

Our 250t, 400t, and 750t progression presses, along with a mix of laser fabrication, welded assembly, and form tools, will be utilised with new business. Our team supported the development process and met our partners’ tight schedule demands, delivering products complete with ISIRs to the required quality standards. All our quality procedures adhered to IATF standards.

In 2025, our NPI team has already introduced around 30 metal assemblies to our manufacturing plant. We are currently conducting VAVE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering) exercises, as many parts have been identified as over-engineered. The Jenks & Cattell Engineering NPI team excels in pinpointing the most efficient production routes, which not only speeds up the process but also reduces costs.

Engineering Company Going Green

Jenks and Cattell Engineering today welcomed a new member to our team with the delivery of
a brand new forklift truck, which is the first of our green fleet.

Our recent purchase of the Mitsubishi GRENDIA was influenced
by its incredible durability, fuel economy, low emissions and low noise levels
which encourages more green and environmentally friendly operations in our working
factory.

The new forklift truck will be put to test over the years,
driving around our 10,000m2 factory and lifting tonnes of metal parts everyday ready for
delivery and transporting for export.

Job Creation & Apprenticeship Announcement During National Apprenticeship Week

City of Wolverhampton College T-Level Students

From 10th to 14th February, we are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week. This is the perfect time to announce our expanded partnership with City of Wolverhampton College, an esteemed education provider we’ve collaborated with for over a decade.

Jenks & Cattell Engineering havr announced plans to introduce a new training pathway for up to nine T-Level students this year. T-Levels, which are set to replace BTECs, require students to complete a minimum of 315 hours in a placement as mandated by the Government. Our T-Level students will integrate our training programme with their college coursework. In their first year, they will focus on general engineering principles, and in their second year, they will select an engineering specialism, guided by their experiences at Jenks & Cattell Engineering. Interviews for T-Level positions will be conducted later this month.

Training & Development Manager Job Creation

To support this initiative, Adrian Muston will assume the newly created role of Training and Development Manager. Adrian, who joined Jenks & Cattell Engineering in 2022 as a Senior Process Engineer, is deeply passionate about the future of toolmaking and metalwork engineering. He stated, “We often lose engineering skills when people retire, so I want to use my experience in tool setting to train people to be better tool setters.” Adrian previously spent two years designing and developing a comprehensive training and assessment programme for trainee tool setters. His expertise will extend beyond tool setting, as he will mentor all our apprentices and learners, helping to develop their broader training programmes. He will ensure everything runs smoothly, deadlines are met, and targets are achieved both at work and in college.

Apprenticeship Scheme Announcement

In addition to this, Jenks & Cattell Engineering are thrilled to announce our commitment to welcoming 10 apprentices for our September 2025 intake. These positions will encompass both shop floor and office-based roles, extending beyond engineering. Further details for the apprenticeship scheme will be announced over the upcoming months.

Jenks and Cattell Engineering Ltd, a presswork, laser fabrication and welded assembly supplier are only the third company to have received Caterpillars prestigious Supplier Quality Excellence Process, and it is now the third time we have secured it.

Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd have had over 130 years manufacturing experience in Wolverhampton, and we are a proud manufacturing engineering company to continue to progress year on-year.

Craig Jeavons, Jenks & Cattells Technical Director publicly thanked everyone who works at Jenks & Cattell at the presentation which was attended by over 50 employees today, and stated:

£10,000 Spend on Welding Quality Facility

Jenks and Cattell Engineering recognise how important it is to always conform to customers and international quality standards. To ensure this, we have spent almost £10,000 on our own, in-house macro weld testing facility.

Engineers at Jenks and Cattell follow a strict process of checking each weld at first off, to determine root penetration depth, this is then recorded against its own unique weld number. The sample is then physically kept for a period of three months, however the microscopic picture is held indefinitely.

The spend appears to be a big hit with current customers as many of the invited visitors have already provided great reviews and comments, some believe it to be as good as what they have seen against some laboratories.

Jenks and Cattell ensure that quality and positive process control is to an extremely high standard, and the investment in the new macro weld testing facility is just another reason for existing and future customers to have confidence in JCEL production, quality and services for welded parts.

JOSCAR Approval for Jenks & Cattell Engineering

We are proud to share that Dylan Simpson, one of our talented apprentices at Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd, has been nominated for In-Comm Training’s prestigious "Learner of the Year" award.

Dylan joined us in 2022 as a Toolmaking Apprentice through In-Comm Training and has shown consistent development, dedication, and a real passion for engineering. His nomination reflects not only his commitment but also our strong track record in supporting and progressing toolmaking apprentices.

Through a blend of college education and hands-on experience, Dylan has built solid skills in CNC machining, milling, drilling, and hand-fitting. Applying this knowledge in a real manufacturing setting has helped him develop both technical ability and critical problem-solving skills.

Dylan shares:

"Attending both college and work has really benefited me. I’ve learned to troubleshoot independently and understand the reasons behind engineering challenges."

With ambitions to move into tool design and project management, Dylan continues to grow under the mentorship of experienced colleagues. Increased Capacity with Double Shifts

Jenks and Cattell Engineering Ltd, est 1886, are a leading supplier of sheet metal manufacturing and engineering and have a very impressive and diverse range of services and equipment to provide customers with a full engineering service.

With presses of 10 to 1000 tonnes, two laser machines cutting up to 20mm, and an impressive manual and robotic welding section, Jenks and Cattell Engineering can manufacture parts of both simple and intricate designs for a wide range of industries including automotive, white goods, off-highway and construction.

2015-2020 has an expectation of planned growth for the company, where customers will benefit from increased investment in machinery, automation and additional team members, as well as an additional shift.

Nick George, Sales Director, says:

For our customers, lead times will be reduced dramatically as the laser fabrication is already automated for 24-7 production, and now we will be manufacturing metal parts, metal assemblies and metal components from 6am until 10pm, over two shifts.

It is a very exciting time for the company as we look to further diversify and expand our customer base.

The double shift pattern will encourage Jenks and Cattell to become very proactive and responsive to all customers, with the ability to manufacture a larger quantity of parts in a quicker time frame.

German Order Provides An Encouraging Future For Jenks and Cattell

With over 20 years of successful exporting experience, Jenks and Cattell Engineering has developed a huge capability and capacity to manufacture quality goods for European export, and today we have taken another huge step into the German market.

Jenks and Cattell maintain an existing relationship with Europes leading provider of its sector within the automotive industry based in the UK, and from providing an excellent service and
quality, the reputation has opened a road towards expansion in supplying the German division of the company also.

With a recent trip to Germany, theJenks and Cattell team secured a part to be manufactured at our site in Wolverhampton, which will eventually find its place into a very prestigious German sports car. The work completed for both the UK and German divisions of the company involve the use of on-site extensive presswork equipment, with presses up to 1,000 tonnes. This is

Arrival Of New Laser Machine Set To Increase Production

Jenks and Cattell Engineering Ltd have taken delivery of a brand new Trumf TruLaser 3030 today, which will accompany our current laser machine in order to increase our laser capacity for our customers requirements.

Our current Trumpf laser machine cuts steel 16mm and our new machine will increase our services, enabling a 20mm cut of mild steel, 14mm stainless steel and 10mm of aluminium.

We are pleased to announce that all of our MIG welding team have now achieved an internationally recognised certificate for their welding competence.

In order to be awarded the certified qualification, Chris, Dan, Lewis and Mark, who specialise in our welding department, completed a rigorous training and approval process which involved various sized fillet welds being assessed to ensure an excellent quality weld was being ensured.

Jenks and Cattell Engineering have an excellent range of welding equipment in order to meet our customers demands including spot, projection, CD and CO2. We have two robot welders as well as highly skilled manual welders. All of our welds have a strict approval process and are quality checked in our in-house Macro Weld Facility.

We have teamed up with Wolverhampton College as we are currently advertising for Tool Setting, Technical and Estimating engineering apprentices to start in September of this year.

The budding engineers will be provided with the opportunity to earn whilst they are learning, with the course including 2 days at college to gain an NVQ Level 3 as well as 3 days working at our Wolverhampton engineering factory.

Quality Management

Your partner should implement quality control into every aspect of manufacture from prototype to production. Metal fabrications are reviewed to ensure tolerances can be achieved at drawing specification at quotation stage. It is important to check out their quality assurance accreditation’s and procedures. A reputable supplier will have an ISO 9001 quality accreditation as a minimum, and a quality team with inspection and measuring equipment to guarantee quality precision.

We are accredited to ISO 9001 and operate to IATF 16949 standards. We have an onsite macro weld test facility, CMM measuring, 15-minute production checks, first-off and last-off pass off, pressure testing and a dedicated PDI area.

All our partners receive ISIR and PPAP to level 3 as standard. The Quality Team lead the way to encourage the whole team to target zero defects and variance, and all fabricated components are assembled with jigs and fixtures to ensure consistency and repeatability.

The ideal partner should be focussed on continuous improvement and investing in engineering and manufacturing technologies. To continuously improve, there should be clear signs of growth and financial stability. Analyse quality and accounts data to see evidence of improvement.

Engineering Apprentices of 2015

Jenks & Cattell Engineering are proud to take on our engineering apprentices each year, with the skills gap being very apparent within the industry, we feel that apprentices are key members of our growth structure, and we are happy to see such a number of them succeeding in engineering at Jenks & Cattell.

Including our 2015 intake we now have 7 apprentices, 3 graduates and Jack who is currently completing his HNC in mechanical engineering at Wolverhampton University.

Jenks & Cattell would like to offer a warm welcome to our 2015 intake of youngsters who are potentially the future of Jenks & Cattell Engineering. We have Aiden, who is our trainee estimator, who has now completed his level 3 NVQ in mechanical engineering at Sandwell Training Academy. Also from Sandwell Training Academy, we have Luke who is just began his apprenticeship as a tool setter at Jenks & Cattell Engineering.

Finally for 2015, we are pleased to welcome Jack, who is at Wolverhampton College completing his NVQ level 3 in mechanical engineering twice a week, and spending three days at Jenks & Cattell as an apprentice project engineer.

Excellent 95% Audit Awarded For Easter

Not only are Jenks and Cattell Engineering happy to be enjoying the Easter
break, but are also proud to announce yet another excellent audit within the factory and shop floor based in Willenhall, Wolverhampton.

An international automotive company visited the site this week and closely
inspected the production, quality, structure, time leads, problem solving
abilities and facilities to see if Jenks and Cattell Engineering were suitable suppliers for the very prestigious and potentially lucrative order.

A classified 'A' grading at 95% was awarded to the engineering firm after a thorough inspection.

This is the fourth 95%+ audit awarded in the past twelve months and the results leave Jenks
and Cattell Engineering one final step closer to building upon a close working relationship in providing metal presswork, pressings and laser fabrication to the industry.

Jenks & Cattell Engineering is renowned for offering a range of comprehensive services under one roof. From laser cutting low volumes and prototypes to metal pressing high-volume complex parts and manufacturing metal assemblies with our CNC machining and welding capabilities.

We are excited to announce our latest investment in machinery to enhance our engineering solutions and provide innovative support for our customers’ prototype ideas before mainstream metal production.

Our first 3D printer is the Bambu Lab X1, featuring a build volume of 256 x 256 x 256 mm. Its auto bed levelling with force sensors and micro lidar precision ensures we produce parts with the required quality and accuracy. It will also give us extra options and capabilities when manufacturing jigs and fixtures in-house, and at a faster pace.

Engineering Company Inspiring Students at Local School

Yesterday, our Managing Director, Jeremy King, and Sales and Marketing Assistant, Eleanor Russon, conducted presentations which hopefully inspired budding engineers at Codsall High School.

Engineering has proven to be a popular optional subject at the school situated just 8 miles away from Jenks and Cattell in Wolverhampton and being so local to the school, our aim is to encourage the pupils to follow an engineering career and potentially apply for apprenticeships in presswork, toolmaking, welding and laser at our site.

We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of pupils who had already decided to follow an engineering pathway aged just 13-14, and Jenks and Cattell Engineering will do all that they can to support their career path.

Jenks and Cattell have employed apprentices for the past few years that have gone from strength to strength, but with a rise in demand, we are looking to increase our apprenticeship take-on and our focus today was to ensure that young people in the Wolverhampton area know about Jenks and Cattell as a small engineering company so that we stand a chance against bigger, international engineering companies.

Today the BBC have announced that unemployment rates are falling, however 850,000 young people in the UK are still out of work, and we believe they could benefit from a long term and prosperous career within engineering, particularly at Jenks and Cattell Engineering.

Jenks and Cattell Engineering and Codsall High School plan to continue the existing relationship with Jenks and Cattell employees taking the time to help at events including mock interviews, workshops, site visits and providing work experience to pupils as well as sponsoring them in arising engineering events

38 Years Of Hard Work Brings Director Level Promotion

Jenks and Cattell Engineering are proud to announce a very important and prestigious promotion within our team.

Craig Jeavons and Nick George, who have a collective 38 years within the company, have both been invited to become Directors of the company this week.

Both Craig and Nick have worked hard throughout their working lives at Jenks and Cattell, with Nick starting as a Production Engineer in 1997 and Craig beginning as Assistant Quality Manager in 1993. As well learning the ins and outs of the whole company, they have both developed a strong passion and enthusiasm to strive towards the success and future of Jenks and Cattell.

Metal Automotive Component Supplier

We have been a world leading expert in metal pressings for nearly 140 years. Our specialisation includes automotive metal presswork, laser-cut fabrications, welded assembly, and CNC machining. Notably, we were the original manufacturers of headlamp rims for Mini and Austin vehicles in the 1950s, today, we continue to produce these aftermarket tooled parts for classic car enthusiasts.

Quality and customer service have always been at the core of our operations. In 1990, we became one of the first companies to receive approval for the BS5750 quality system from British Systems. Our journey into high-volume automotive components began with General Motors and Austin Rover | Rover. We invested in automation, including robotic welders and a 6-station pick-and-place AIDA line, which remains a competitive edge for us globally. We continually invest, and we are commissioning a new 750-tonne press this month.

Jenks and Cattell Engineering are sponsoring one of our very important customers this month as they take on a 150 mile challenge.

5 employees have decided to tackle the infamous Sea to Sea Challenge which includes cycling from Seascale on the Irish sea to Whitby on the north sea whilst taking a very strenuous route via Hard Knott Pass in the Lake District all in ONE day.

The cycle ride is all in aid of charity and the fundraising proceeds will all go to the workforce led charity committee, Leoni CCC, which supports other charities in the local area. Last year the fantastic cause enabled cheques totalling £11,000 to be handed out to 11 different charities including Donna Louise Trust, CLIC, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Special Olympics Stafford, Joe Gilligan Cancer Trust

Jenks & Cattell are pleased to announce we have been re-certified to our ISO 9001 and TS 16949, following the usual renewal procedure.

Following our recent audit from SGS, Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd, Wolverhampton, we are proud to have been accredited with the quality certifications since 2004, which will continue until at least 2018.

The accreditation has involved a total quality focus on all aspects of our pressed, laser cut and welded parts and assemblies for over 11 years, across all sides of our business including development, production, manufacturing and service.

With the ISO/TS 16949 accreditation in place, we provide all of our customers with quality parts, including PPAP to level 4, complete with ISIR and parts measured to CAD using our in house CMM machine. In line with this, we also have our macro weld test facility, to ensure all of our welds are to the customer required specifics and quality standard.

Being TS 16949 allows us to meet global standards for the automotive industry, which is currently 65% of Jenks & Cattell Engineerings business, however this allows us to run the impressive quality standard throughout our business and benefit all of our customers within various industries.

New Laser Machine To Double Production Efficiency

Jenks and Cattell are currently more competitive than ever
in cost, quality and lead times, and with a new addition to the factory floor
in the form of a new Trumpf TruLaser 3030 laser machine on order, the engineering
company now has the capability to increase production efficiency rates and more
than double the laser capacity.

The new laser machine will accompany an existing laser
machine which cuts steel up to 16mm, and the new TruLaser will have the ability
to cut 20mm of mild steel, 15mm of stainless steel and 10mm of aluminium.

The 4kw laser will have a compact lift master attached which
will enable Jenks and Cattell Engineering to offer customers an increased
production rate as the automation will enable the machine to run through the
night.

With both laser machines, Jenks and Cattell can offer
customers services including: laser etching, imprinting part numbers, bar
codes, logos or any other markings on the component. The machines are highly
accurate due to the automation; there is an improved edge quality for both
simple and complex components.

The laser machine is ideal for prototypes and small-high
volume of products at the most cost efficient rate as there is no tooling
expenditure.

The laser will be fitted in the first week of October, to guarantee the usage of our new laser machines benefits, send an enquiry today and take advantage of our just in time delivery system and can

Reducing Customer Tooling Costs With China

Jenks & Cattell Engineering Limited — 08/08/2014

Jenks and Cattell Engineering have developed a successful seven-year relationship with a Chinese company in order to reduce customers costs.

The current set-up involves Tooling and Project Engineer to visit the Shenzhen factory every 6 weeks to project manage the process and ensure that quality is being maintained and that the components are up to the standard of the customers specifications; however as Jenks and Cattell Engineering look to increase its production rates, this week, the Managing Director and Operations Director have also travelled to China to visit the fantastic set-up.

Using Chinese tool makers have allowed Jenks and Cattell Engineering to reduce its customers tooling costs by 45%-50%, and since 2007, and have so far sourced over 500 tools from our partner in Shenzhen. With customers taking advantage of the lower production rates, Jenks and Cattell Engineering were able to save them between 28%-35% piece price, with a guaranteed pay back within 7 months.

Having built up an excellent relationship and communication system with the suppliers, Jenks and Cattell Engineering guarantee to keep customers updated on the progress of their tool during manufacturer.

Not only do Jenks and Cattell Engineering provide cost reductions to its customers, but are also able to deliver sample parts within 6-weeks, using UK material, and produce a full delivery within 16 weeks.

12th Year Achieving Excellent Environmental Standard

Jenks and Cattell Engineering have this week completed an excellent standard level for another year running, to achieve the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System Certification.

After receiving an annual onsite SGS audit yesterday, which closely analysed and reported on areas including maintenance, management programmes, communications, document control, operational control, legal compliances, hazardous waste, emissions, noise, packaging, measurement, transport and disposal of oil, Jenks and Cattell are pleased to announce that no aspects alerted any problems.

£420 Raised During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd, with a workforce of over 80 men, faces the statistical reality that 10% of their employees could potentially be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This alarming statistic prompted the company to take action during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in March.

The employees united in compassion and commitment to men’s health by purchasing official Prostate Cancer UK badges, wearing them proudly. Through a successful fundraising effort, they raised £210, which was generously matched pound for pound by Jenks & Cattell Engineering, resulting in a substantial total of £420. These funds will directly contribute to prostate cancer research, aiding scientists in developing better diagnostic tools, treatments, and ultimately saving lives.

Prostate cancer ranks as the most common cancer among men (excluding skin cancer). Early detection plays a pivotal role in improving outcomes. Beyond raising funds, our initiative also aimed to raise awareness about prostate cancer. We hope that our workplace awareness campaign has empowered employees to recognize symptoms and engage in open conversations about men’s health. The £420 donation represents a step toward a healthier future for men everywhere.

New Lean Manufacturing Area for Operational Excellence at Jenks and Cattell Engineering

Jenks & Cattell Engineering is excited to announce the official opening of their Lean Manufacturing Area for Operational Excellence. It is an initiative designed to further enhance operational efficiency and quality standards.

A cross-functional team comprising of senior engineers, quality and sales personnel, team leaders, and shop floor members foster a comprehensive understanding of each component and process. The diverse team stucture work in a collaborative environment.

Andrew Mullan, Jenks & Cattell Engineering's Lean Manufacturing Engineer said: “We are actively engaged in Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE), Kaizen, DMAIC, and 8D projects and follow a 5-Why and 1-How methodology.

These initiatives are open to all team members at Jenks & Cattell Engineering. The Lean Manufacturing Area is located on the shop floor, and the boards are very visible and accessible, which allows anyone to raise quality concerns or cost saving initiatives and to see ongoing progress.”

The Lean Manufacturing Problem Solving Team is dedicated to addressing these concerns proactively. The process: Submit Kaizen ticket to propose a concern or idea, they are reviewed by the team who meet at least twice a week or as needed. The outcomes of these meetings are integrated into daily quality meetings also.

Jenks & Cattell Engineering is committed to continuous improvement and operates with several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One key KPI is cost saving/cost prevention through Kaizen activities, with an annual target of £250k. £250k was exceeded in 2024, and £33,000 has been saved in 2025 to-date.

This new Lean Manufacturing Area is a testament to commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement. All processes and overall performance at the Wolverhampton based plant are predicted to be positively impacted.

An Engineer is required with an engineering passion, with a desire to move into a sales role within an engineering company, or perhaps has a proven record of engineering sales experience.

The successful candidate should have an existing knowledge of the manufacturing industry, understanding the presswork industry from the beginning, identifying the best methods of manufacturing and industries which are suitable to Jenks & Cattells capabilities and capacity.

The sales person must have excellent communication skills to be confident to speak with various customers as well as all internal departments of Jenks & Cattell.

Sales experience is preferable, as the candidate is required to be commercially astute.

Sales Role

The Key Account Sales Engineer role will include:

Identifying suitable markets and industry for the business, also identifying where Jenks & Cattells current capacity and capabilities will be most competitive.

Understanding the customer base, with the ability to grow current customers and gain new customers.

The candidate is expected to grow and run accounts up to the value of £1m-£1.5m.

Confidently communicate with all colleagues, of all departments to resolve issues and feedback customer comments. Communication within sales, production and quality is essential.

Being confident within customer facing situations, in both positive and negative situations.

Ability and confidence to complete customer visits, both on and offsite, perform the company presentation to a corporate level, complete quality audits and company shop floor tours.

Expectation to do what is necessary to achieve sales including customer visits, cold calls, emails, exhibitions and travelling to support customer requirements.

Sales reporting to be completed as per the business requirements.

Communication and reporting directly to the Sales Director is essential, in order to obtain quotations, remain competitive and meet customer demands.

The candidate is expected to perform excellent account management, from receiving enquiries, obtaining quotations from the estimating team, to handing over orders to the Project Manager. The candidate will look after each customer from start to finish, and always looking to grow each account to its very highest potential. After sales care is essential including regular visits and telephone contact.

Promoted After 40 Years Service

Alan Hillary, who has completed almost 40 years at Jenks and Cattell Engineering Ltd has this week received an internal promotion.

Alan began working at Jenks and Cattell Engineering in 1975, when at the time Jenks and Cattell specialised in the production of garden tools which is the heritage behind the Wolverhampton engineering company.

The garden tools industry came to an end for Jenks and Cattell as it was sold and as a result, Alan was made redundant. However, Jenks and Cattell set up for expansion towards metal presswork predominantly into the automotive industry, and soon recognised Alans importance and he was back working with the team in 1981.

From 1981 to 2014, Alan has worked on the shop floor as a transfer press and coil feed operator. Alans hard work and commitment to the company has been recognised and Jenks and Cattell Engineering offered Alan the opportunity and support of internal training towards a higher position within the factory. Alan trained for his promotion, and passed an exam to be awarded his ROSPA certificate and now has now turned his skills to work as a Tool Setter.

Nick George, Sales Director says: Alan is very hard working and is always a very cheerful member of the team and it is great to see his recognition after his dedication towards Jenks and Cattell.

Outside of work, Alan enjoys all aspects of football where he watches, plays and even coaches the game. Alan coached a local football club for various ages including U9, U11 and U15, and is a Manchester United Fan himself.

All of Jenks & Cattell Engineering welding team members, are now certified by to a Zurich approved Insurance standard and we have also attained weld procedure approvals across our entire range of robotic welding equipment, as well as obtaining our impressive in-house macro weld test facility.

European Exporting Success For Jenks and Cattell

With British manufacturing seemingly being more and more in demand across the world, Jenks and Cattell Engineering are proud that we can support our country as an export manufacturing company producing a high-level of metal parts within various industries throughout Europe.

Jenks and Cattell Engineering have had over 20 years of successful exporting experience,
and to celebrate alongside Export Week, are pleased to announce a huge business
development with an increase in overseas customers.

A recent trip across Europe only complimented the already established customer base,
with deals particularly in Germany, Serbia and Egypt.

This months exporting business has introduced an extra £400,000 of manufacturing work to Jenks and Cattell Engineering which contributes to the planned manufacturing exporting growth over the next few years.

Aluminium Federation Apprentice Nominee

Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd is delighted to announce that Daniel Collins, one of our talented apprentices, has been shortlisted among the top five for the prestigious Aluminium Federation (ALFED) Apprentice of the Year Award. This recognition underscores Dan’s exceptional skills, passion, and contributions to the sheet metal component manufacturing industry, particularly in aluminium.

Dan will join the other shortlisted apprentices and judges at the Make UK Apprenticeship Day on 19th November. The awards evening will be held at the ALFED Annual Dinner at the De Vere Beaumont Windsor on 28th November. Dan will be supported by his family and team members, including Adrian Muston, a Senior Process Engineer at Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd, who has been Dan’s mentor for over two years.

Apprentice Award Recognition

Adrian commented on the award, saying, “Dan truly deserves this recognition for his diligence in every aspect of his work. He consistently brings enthusiasm to each workday, continues to develop a strong work ethic, and is a valued member of our toolroom team.

Dan is currently in his final year at City of Wolverhampton College, pursuing a Level 3 engineering qualification.

We are extremely proud of Dan’s accomplishments and wish him the best of luck at the awards. His dedication and innovative thinking are highly commendable, and we look forward to his continued success in the industry.”

The ALFED Apprentice of the Year Award celebrates outstanding apprentices who have shown exceptional skill, dedication, and contributions to the aluminium manufacturing and processing industry. An ALFED representative stated, “Young people are set to play a crucial role in driving innovation and progress, and ALFED recognises the importance of supporting and empowering the next generation.”

To be considered for this award, Dan completed a project that involved modifying a tool for an aluminium automotive part. The original tool was inefficient, causing downtime on the power presses for a component that Jenks & Cattell Engineering supplies 70,000 units of each month to an automotive partner. Dan’s innovative and systematic modification resulted in a well-functioning tool, significantly reducing downtime and earning him significant recognition within the company.

“I’ve always enjoyed maths and science, and I was inspired by my dad’s career in technical engineering. He was also an engineering apprentice.”

What do you enjoy the most?

“I enjoy finding solutions to creative challenges.”

“The project I completed to be nominated for the ALFED Apprentice of the Year. I received significant recognition for modifying a high-value tool for the automotive industry, which improved its functionality, reduced downtime, and enhanced output, quality, and delivery performance.”

What advice do you have for the future generation?

“Take your time to identify the solution before rushing to complete a task. Doing it right the first time should be the goal.”

Three Peaks Challenge Team Raise Almost £5,000 for Birmingham Children's Hospital

Let’s celebrate the incredible achievement of the Jenks & Cattell Engineering team, who successfully climbed the three highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales.

This team, representing 14% of our total workforce, began their journey with Ben Nevis, completing the climb in 6 ½ hours during Scotland’s warmest weather of the summer. They then tackled Scafell Pike in 4 ½ hours and Snowdon in 5 ½ hours, despite facing wet and windy conditions.

The team encountered several challenges, including road closures, burst tyres, and a few injuries, which unfortunately prevented them from meeting their 24-hour target. However, their efforts in the Three Peaks Challenge were in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, raising an impressive amount exceeding £4,000 so far. This initiative not only raised funds for a worthy cause but also increased awareness of the charity and strengthened multi-functional team relationships among our diverse group of press operators, sales staff, engineers, managers, planners, accountants, and estimators.

Expressing his pride, Managing Director Mike O’Shea said: “It was a fantastic weekend with a great team. I am proud of the teamwork shown in sticking together and the organisation we all demonstrated during this tough challenge.

As one of the leaders here at Jenks & Cattell Engineering, I am exceptionally proud of how much money was raised. A big thank you to Eleanor Imray for organising the event; it was seamless and wouldn’t have happened without you!

Sunshine, Celebrations, and Steve Bull: Jenks & Cattell Engineering Hosts First-Ever ‘Celebration of Achievement’

On Friday 11th April, Jenks & Cattell Engineering held its first-ever ‘Celebration of Achievement’ event. On the hottest day of the year so far, the company’s car park was full of appreciation, laughter, and pride for the incredible people who make Jenks & Cattell what it is today.

As a gesture of gratitude, the team was gifted a 90-minute break to soak up the sunshine and the celebration. With an ice cream van, pizza truck, and drinks flowing freely, spirits were high and smiles were everywhere. But the highlight of the afternoon? A very special guest – Steve Bull MBE, Wolverhampton’s footballing legend and national treasure.

A Wolverhampton Icon Meets a Wolverhampton Institution

Steve “Bully” Bull, who famously scored 306 goals in 561 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers and earned 13 caps for England, left a lasting impression on the team — especially our many loyal Wolves fans. His presence resonated even deeper, as both Steve Bull and Jenks & Cattell Engineering share strong roots in Wolverhampton, a city proud of its rich industrial and sporting heritage.

In fact, both Wolves and Jenks & Cattell have been part of the city’s fabric since the 1800s, growing up together and standing the test of time. It felt only fitting that Bully was the one to present this year's Long Service Awards, honouring an incredible 41 team members for their commitment and service.

Celebrating Long Service & Team Excellence

The awards recognised:

21 team members for 5+ years of service
15 team members for 10+ years
5 team members for 20+ years

Each recipient was presented with a bronze, silver, or gold service pin badge and a certificate by Craig Jeavons, Technical Director, and Steve Bull himself.

Among the highlights was the recognition of Steve Reade, who first joined Jenks & Cattell in April 1996. Now preparing to retire at the end of this month, Steve’s nearly 30 years of service were celebrated with laughter and heartfelt stories, from Craig Jeavons — who has over 32 years under his belt. Though Craig had ambitiously prepared a “quick” five-minute tribute, it quickly turned into a well-deserved spotlight on Steve’s legendary character and contributions. Steve Bull closed the tribute by presenting Steve with his gold pin badge, certificate, and a £300 gift from the company.

Milestone Moments: IATF 16949 Accreditation

Another key highlight of the day was the celebration of Jenks & Cattell Engineering’s achievement of the IATF 16949 accreditation in December 2024 — a vital certification in the automotive manufacturing industry.

Wayne Flanagan, Head of Quality, took to the stage to share what the accreditation means to the business: improved processes, expanded opportunity, and recognition across multiple sectors. Wayne praised the exceptional investment and teamwork that led to the accreditation being secured in record time, with special thanks to Tracy Richards, Compliance Manager. He proudly noted that just weeks later, the company landed a major order from a partner who required IATF certification from their supply chain.

Prouction Planner

A requirement for a production planner to organise and schedule sheet metal manufacturing/production for large customer.

On a daily basis, the successful applicant will communicate with the rest of the team to schedule machinery, production and delivery dates.

The applicant will order all materials required for manufacturing from outsourced suppliers, and will also have the responsibility to negotiate the best available prices from our suppliers and sub-contractors.

The team currently consists of 5 planners, who report directly to the Operations Manager.

Applicants must have experience working to schedules, tight deadlines and supplier liaison.
Excellent communication is key as the role includes regular communication with the customer to update them on their manufacturing process and delivery dates.

Experience is preferable within the manufacturing / sheet metal industry.

Quality Inspector

A requirement for an enthusiastic and experienced Quality Inspector to ensure all of our sheet metal parts and products comply with standards and customer requirements.

Applicant must have the ability to read engineering drawings and have an understanding of sheet metal manufacturing equipment.

Must conduct visual and measurement rests, rejecting and returning parts where unacceptable and document all inspection reports.

Communication is key to coordinate with colleagues to resolve any quality issues.

Experience within TS 16949, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 is preferable.

Operation of CMM is also preferable.

Working under shift pattern.

Happy First Birthday to Our Laser Cutting Machine

Jenks and Cattell Engineering would like to celebrate our second laser machine being in action for a year today.

Our Trumpf TruLaser 3030 was a half a million pound investment for Jenks and Cattell last year and we are pleased with how well it is performing and how we have been able to generate new customers in different industries, as well as benefiting our existing customers with a diversification of manufacturing method.

The laser machine can cut material thickness up to 20mm and of 3x1.5 meters in size. It is ideal for prototypes and any production of fewer than 5000 components per annum.

The laser machine is teamed up with our fabrication centre, where we can complete customer requirements with folding, forming, bending, nut insertion and welding of any laser cut blanks all operations which we have the capability and capacity to complete in-house in on our West Midlands engineering base.

Our Wolverhampton based engineering company is currently performing two daily shifts, and the laser machines can actually run 24-7 on a fully automated systems.
